April 20 - We visited Murray and Barbara Matuschka's deer farm near Taupo. Venison production in New Zealand is currently around 23,000 tonnes of which 90% is exported. New Zealand is the largest producer and exporter. At the Matuchka's we thought we'd see some red deer and learn about how they are farmed for antler velvet and venison. We did, but we were in for a real treat. Seems Murray is quite a collector - he has zebra, several types of deer, birds -- all kinds of animals on his property! Also an artist, Murray is known for his animal paintings and sculptures, which can be found all over New Zealand. It was an enjoyable morning and they treated us to delicious snacks in the clubhouse they rent out for receptions.
